"Cerberus" by William Blake
I have been fascinated by Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards Hades, since I was a little boy. I don't know why that is. Maybe because I'm a dog person. I feel for the hound, and he appears in a lot of my work.
A modern analogue of Cerberus appears as a major character in my novel, Mother of Monsters. He was the subject of Devil Dog, the first poem I ever sold (see it here). He is a supporting character in the newest poem I've been working on, Cerberus Requiem. Hopefully you'll see it out there soon.
I find him a compelling figure. I wonder about the inner lives of dogs, what they feel, what they think. What is going on behind the six eyes of beast that patrols the gates of Hell? Is he lonely? Is he happy? Playful when not on guard? Do his heads get along? These are questions that I can't help but muse on, and I can't imagine two poems and a novel are all I'll write about him.
